Few games get a reaction like the Arkham Horror game series. The base game is incredible and the expansions do add a lot. I just do not recommend running it with more than one expansion. As time went on, it was harder and harder to pull in players for the game unless you were at a con where people were prepared to play a 4+ hour game. Then came Eldritch Horror – a new take on a the Arkham Horror concept. The designers took the basic concept of Arkham Horror and globalized it. They had me at global

Talisman is one of those games I will always seem to buy for. I enjoy it with my kids and with my friends. In past editions, it did get repetitive but what I like most about the FFG version is the variety they seem to be injecting into the game. Unlike past editions, FFC has put out various sized expansions so as to control the bloat a game like this can develop. I bought two expansions recently – The Firelands and The Nether Realm – that are very small but have significant impact on the game.

At Origins 2013, I saw a lot of demos of a game called Castellan being played and I really wanted to try it out. Try as I may, I could never find an open table with someone there to teach me. It looked like a very simple game, reminding me of that game you play with your kids in restaurants while waiting for your food, connecting the dots and making more squares than your opponent. I was very curious on how they made this into a board game.

One game that has really impacted me this year is Spartacus, A Game of Blood and Treachery. Not only am I a huge fan of the series but the game itself is great, whether you like the series or not. It is one of those games that has so many satisfying elements in it that I crave to play it every opportunity I get. However, one of the more disappointing aspects of the game was the player limit. I prefer games that allow for 5 or 6 players and the base game only allowed 4. Enter the Spartacus: The Serpents and The Wolf expansion. Not only does it allow for 5 or 6 players, it brings a lot more to the arena.

Spartacus: A Game of Blood & Treachery is a new Board Game from Gale Force Nine. Most people that know me will tell you that I am a huge fan of this show. I was heartbroken when it ended, although I knew it was coming and the ending was not going to be a happy one. When I had heard there was going to be a board game, I was skeptical. Many board games that tie in to shows like this are just terrible – not a lot of thought is put into the design, and they are simply trying to capitalize on a new fad. Once the show is over, the game will just collect dust and you have no desire to play it again.

The guys of Card Board Stash demo’ed this game for me, despite my reservations. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can tell you now that this game’s entertainment value can outlast the show considerably. It is a fantastic game and in this review, I hope to tell you why.

Talisman: The City is a new Board Game Expansion from Fantasy Flight Games. Talisman City was one of the classic expansions put out for 2nd edition back in the day. Originally it had some very innovative additions to Talisman and we always played the game with it. When I saw this expansion for Talisman, I was curious how Fantasy Flight had changed it.

You awaken on the cement floor, naked and covered in goo, surrounded by huge tanks with other humans. You see that you have fallen out of a similar tank, conduits and wires dangling. You are in some kind of experimental facility, dark and strange, and all you know to do is ESCAPE!

Thus is the basic premise of Level 7. It has the feel of other games similar to it with some interesting twists. It is a heavy thematic game with interesting mechanics. One to four players can play a character who must escape from the Subterra Bravo facility while dodging armed guards and alien clones.
