Descending from a canine species, the Torani are a furred humanoid creatures with a tail. Most are similar to the Terran canines and their colors vary based on their pack. They have a pack mentality which has now grown into a complex political structure. Torani were once purely carnivorous but have grown omnivorous through time.

Historical Details
One of the older races in the region, the Torani originated from world called J’Vaara III – an Earth-like world thriving with life and active ecosystems. In it’s early years, this world was a sight of destructive wars for centuries, as the Torani Noble Packs ravaged their world in intra-racial conflicts. After peace was declared by the surviving Noble Packs, the society formed around the social abhorrence of physical violence. Instead, the society worked out their difference covertly, through political intrigue. The aristocracy grew in power as the shadows were filled with more death and violence than any wars in the past.
Finding stellar travel difficult for their species, they genetically manipulated (uplifted) primitive ape-like wolves to explore for the use of exploring their system and eventually neighboring systems. Thus was born the Tor’Drani. Unfortunately for the Torani, the Tor’Drani did not suppress their penchant for war.
In a few short decades, the Torani had built a small stellar nation – a burgeoning empire – with the Torani noble packs ruling over the worker class Tor’Drani. The Torani medical technology was developed to that helped them to adapt to space travel. However by then, many of the in-system colonies were dominated by the Tor’Drani, as were the few interstellar colonies. When the noble packs of the Torani arrived to claim their property, the Tor’Drani naturally revolted.
The slave rebellion started on the outlying colonies of the J’Vaara system. Unprepared for it, the Torani took heavy losses and most of their outer system colonies were lost. Revenge for the harsh treatment as slave lead the Tor’Drani to treat their Torani prisoners even worse. This spurred on the Torani to fight back, seeing these actions as an extreme affront to their honor.
The inevitable J’vaaran War rendered J’Varra III an atomic wasteland. J’Vaara IV was colonized and terraformed to a reasonably habitable level for the Torani. However, in the end, the Tor’Drani gained little in the war. For years after, both factions prospered in their own way. Scientific growth prospered among the Torani, with the development of genetic and psionic engineering. Since then, all Torani have had a tendency to some level of Psi power. Despite the end result of the way, the Tor’Drani also flourished. Permanently the worker class of the Torani Empire, they banded together in Guilds. The became the craftsmen, engineers, spacers, pilots and space station operators of the Torani Empire. Like the noble packs, the Tor’Drani Guilds grew in power. The Torani controlled the money, and the Guilds controlled the resources.
Then the Sathar invasion.
The Sathar attacked at the point when both races were at their peak of prosperity. The Sathar underestimated the resolve of both races, as well as their ability to put aside their differences for a common cause. After a generation of war, the Torani and the Tor’Drani were able to force out the Sathars from their system. From this war, both races were able to extract advanced faster-than-light drive tech, and other advanced technologies. With the advent of FTL flight, rather than stay the Tor’Drani took opportunity to leave the system to find a new world to thrive on – named Yuetania, after the fabled rebellion leader. From there, the Tor’Drani built considerable merchant fleets with the intent of contacting other civilizations and trading with them. Still considered part of the Torani Empire, the Tor’Drani see themselves now as partners in the joint efforts of the two races. However, there is still some deep seeded animosity between the two races.
The Torani have the ability to speak Pan-Gal Common, but also have some languages within their race. I’kang’li –Ancient language of the Elders, used in religious and other traditional ceremonies. Ika’Ara –The language of the Higher Packs, the ruling Noble Packs of the homeworld. The Tor’Drani have the ability to speak Pan-Gal Common, but also have some languages within their race. G’kang’li – This is the principal language of the Tor’Drani. Pack Languages
The Torani are friendly to most Frontier races, except the Humans, who they see as barbaric monkey men. The Torani know very little about the Dralasite or the Vrusk, and approach them with respect and interest. They don’t respect the Yazirians, considering them relatives to the Humans. The Humma are considered their mammal brothers, the Ifshnit are considered pests, and the Osakar are approached with hesitation because of their appearance.
The Torani respect power, loyalty to ones duty to ones noble pack. Like their terrestrial equivalents, the Torani are very sly and deceiving. Their political structure represents centuries of evolution around those two aspects of their society; deception and the honor of the pack. Above all, loyalty to the noble pack is important. The Torani have a hard time gaining trust from the other species, because of their deceitful ways around politics, but they are the more powerful politicians in the region. They gain power through stabbing their foes in the back, while smiling at them all the way. However, because of their honor, they are at times very trustworthy. It’s just hard to judge when they are being honorable and when they are being conniving.
The Tor’Drani believe in relaxation, and physical pleasure. They are strong hedonistic, and polygamous. They are very extravagant and eccentric and respect honor, quick wit, and a sense of humor. They are a very relaxed and pleasant race. They respect expression of ones’ inner self and uniqueness, and a good deal for interesting items. The Tor’Drani have no problems with any of the races. They accept them as all equal, although some the K’Dasi do get on their nerves. They consider the K’Dasi as a pain. Of all the races in the Frontier sector, the Humma are the most respected for their uniqueness compared to all the other Frontier races. The Humma is considered a brethren race. Most Tor’Drani are expert merchants and salesman, and most trust them for their word in that regard, unlike the Torani brethren. They have a strong belief in the free market.
The Torani basic social unit is the monogamist nuclear family. These families are members of a noble packs, and the packs are structured in a complex nobility political organization . Each centers around their own specific goals and routes of gaining power. The females of the pack and family tend to run the society, with the males being the lower sex. Males tend to be less deceitful then the females. The Tor’Drani society is polygamist, where families are more communal. Where the Torani packs are based on honor, tradition and merging family lines, the Tor’Drani pack is the family and the family is the pack.
Pack Determination and Naming
The Pack is the central social structure both the Torani and Tor’Drai. The Torani family serves the pack; working to honor the Elders. Their packs are a strict structure of tradition, title and prestige. Meanwhile with the Tor’Drani are more about trade and craft. Their packs are more structured like merchant guilds.
To determine what pack a character is from, roll on the following chart or with the GMs approval, the player can choose his/her own pack. Each pack has been traditionally better at something than other, but not all members of that pack do that one thing. They all have a conglomeration of occupations and interests.

The player can name his own pack, but must roll again on the chart above 1d3 times (or pick) to determine allegiances. Rolls of 19-20 count as no allegiances. If in the end, no allegiances are made, then the pack is a fledgling one, just starting out in the power structure of the Torani society.
(2) A commoner, with no pack alliances. They have the least honor in Torani society, and are considered as low as Tor’Drani. They receive a -5 social modifier.
