Qui'osk Iskara, The Lost Dreadnaught
The Sword of the Empress
The Last Vigil — Ghost Dreadnought of the Siriusan Dominion
An enduring legend of the Rift and the Outer Fringe
Some ships are lost. Others simply never arrive.
The Sword That Never Fell
There are many ghost stories told among the spacers of the Fringe. Tales of abandoned vessels drifting through Foldspace, ancient wrecks broadcasting distress calls, and ships that appear on sensors only to disappear when approached. Most are exaggerations, misunderstandings, or deliberate fabrications passed between crews during long voyages.
There is one, however, that has persisted for generations. They call it The Last Vigil. The vessel’s true name is Qui’osh Iskara, translated from the ancient Siriusan language as The Sword of the Empress. Once among the great imperial dreadnoughts of the Siriusan Dominion, the colossal warship disappeared during the Dominion’s long and destructive conflict with the Que’Sha. Its disappearance was never adequately explained, and what few surviving records mention the vessel provide contradictory accounts of its final deployment.
Some suggest it was dispatched on a classified military operation near the Rift. Others claim it was pursuing a retreating Que’Sha fleet when all contact was lost. A handful of surviving Dominion documents indicate that the vessel had been assigned a mission of considerable importance to the imperial throne itself, although the nature of that assignment remains unknown.
Whatever the truth, the Qui’osh Iskara never returned. For centuries, historians assumed it had been destroyed, another casualty of an era that consumed countless ships, soldiers, and entire civilizations. Then came the sightings.
A Warship Out of Time
The Qui’osh Iskara was constructed during the height of the Siriusan Dominion’s military expansion, when imperial authority was enforced as much through the presence of its enormous warships as through diplomacy or political influence.
Designed for prolonged independent operations, the dreadnought was effectively a mobile fortress. Its heavily armored hull housed extensive weapons batteries, fighter hangars, military barracks, command facilities, engineering complexes, and enough provisions to sustain a substantial military force far from Dominion territory.
One of its most remarkable features was an extensive network of military stasis vaults. These chambers were intended to preserve personnel during exceptionally long deployments, reducing the logistical demands of maintaining a fully active crew and allowing the vessel to transport entire expeditionary forces without exhausting its resources. According to surviving fragments of Dominion military documentation, the Qui’osh Iskara carried not merely its regular naval complement but thousands of Siriusan soldiers, officers, and specialist personnel. An army within a warship.
The final recorded preparation of the dreadnought reportedly included the activation of these stasis facilities. Whether this was routine procedure or related to the vessel’s classified mission is unknown. What is known is that shortly afterward, the Sword of the Empress disappeared from Dominion records. No wreckage was recovered. No confirmed distress transmission was received. No surviving crew member ever returned to explain what had happened.
For a time, the Dominion searched for its missing dreadnought. Eventually, there were other wars to fight, other ships to build, and other disasters demanding imperial attention. The Qui’osh Iskara became another name among the Dominion’s countless military losses. But it was not destroyed. At least, not according to those who claim to have seen it.
Sightings Along the Rift
The first widely circulated account of the vessel’s reappearance originated from a merchant crew operating near the outer Fringe. Their ship detected an enormous unidentified contact emerging from a region of unstable space. Initially believing it to be a sensor anomaly, the crew attempted several scans before realizing that the object was an actual vessel.
Its dimensions suggested a capital warship of extraordinary size. It maintained a steady course, ignored all communication attempts, and displayed no recognizable contemporary identification signals. The merchant captain ordered a cautious approach. Before the vessel could close the distance, the unidentified contact disappeared.
There was no detectable Foldspace transition, no conventional propulsion signature, and no debris. One moment, an enormous warship occupied the space ahead of them. The next, it was gone. The account might have been dismissed entirely had similar reports not begun circulating among other Fringe crews.
Over the following generations, occasional sightings described an enormous, heavily armored dreadnought appearing without warning near the Rift and along the outermost reaches of inhabited space.
Its exterior navigation lights were sometimes illuminated. Other witnesses described the vessel travelling in complete darkness, its immense silhouette visible only against nearby stars or planetary bodies. Most unsettling were reports that its weapons occasionally moved to track approaching ships. No confirmed account has established that the dreadnought ever opened fire.
Those attempting to pursue it invariably lost contact, either through sudden sensor interference or the vessel’s inexplicable disappearance. The intervals between encounters varied considerably. Years might pass without a credible sighting, followed by several reports from entirely different regions of the Fringe. Its apparent movements defied conventional navigational logic.
Among spacers, the unidentified warship became known as The Last Vigil. In some ports, particularly those frequented by Que’Sha merchants and travellers, another name eventually emerged. The Sleeping Tyrant. Perhaps the most consistent—and inexplicable—detail shared by those claiming to have encountered the Qui’osh Iskara is its extraordinary condition.
In every credible sighting, the ancient dreadnought appears immaculate. Its enormous armored hull bears no evidence of weapons impacts, battle damage, corrosion, micrometeorite strikes, or even the gradual deterioration expected of a vessel exposed to space for centuries. Its weapons batteries remain intact, its exterior lighting operational, and its superstructure seemingly untouched by time.
This remarkable preservation has led some researchers to question whether the vessel has experienced the same passage of time as the rest of the Expanse. Others speculate that an extraordinarily sophisticated automated maintenance system remains operational aboard the dreadnought.
Neither explanation adequately accounts for the complete absence of damage. Whatever happened to the Sword of the Empress, the vessel appears today exactly as it did when it departed on its final imperial assignment. It is not merely a ghost ship. It is a ghost ship that refuses to age.
The Army That Never Died
The most disturbing aspect of the legend concerns the vessel’s crew. According to surviving Dominion records, the Qui’osh Iskara possessed stasis facilities capable of preserving thousands of military personnel. If the accounts surrounding its disappearance are accurate, those chambers may have been occupied when the dreadnought vanished.
This raises an extraordinary possibility. An entire Siriusan expeditionary force may still be aboard, suspended in time, unaware that centuries have passed since their final deployment.
The officers commanding that force might awaken believing themselves to be operating under the legitimate authority of the imperial throne. Their military intelligence, political understanding, and strategic objectives would reflect a Dominion that has long since passed into history. They would know nothing of the modern Shattered Expanse. To the Que’Sha, this possibility is particularly troubling.
Their ancestors experienced the Dominion’s imperial ambitions firsthand. For many Que’Sha communities, the Sword of the Empress is not an interesting archaeological curiosity or a romantic ghost story. It represents the potential return of a military power whose legacy remains deeply embedded in their history.
An intact Dominion dreadnought would be dangerous enough. An intact dreadnought carrying thousands of soldiers awaiting orders from an Empress who may have been dead for centuries is something considerably worse.
There is, however, another question that remains unanswered. If the entire crew is in stasis, who is operating the vessel? Something must be maintaining its systems, controlling its movements, monitoring nearby contacts, and preserving the thousands of lives supposedly sleeping within its hull.
Some believe the ship possesses an ancient Dominion command intelligence, continuing to execute its final instructions without regard for the passage of time. Others suggest that a small caretaker crew remains awake, perhaps rotating through the stasis chambers to maintain the vessel.
A less popular theory proposes that the ship is not continuously travelling through normal space at all.
Instead, it may be trapped in some form of spatial displacement associated with the Rift, periodically emerging into reality before disappearing again.
If this is true, the centuries separating the Qui’osh Iskara from its original deployment may have passed very differently for those aboard. The dreadnought might not be aware that it is lost. It may simply be attempting to reach its destination.
The Que’Sha Warning
Among certain Que’Sha communities, the legend of the Qui’osh Iskara has acquired an almost cautionary significance. An old saying, frequently repeated when discussing the Dominion and its surviving military relics, translates approximately as:
Never celebrate the death of an enemy whose tomb you have not seen.
For Que’Sha historians, the dreadnought represents one of the great unresolved questions of their people’s past. Its recovery could provide extraordinary insight into Dominion military operations, imperial politics, and events that shaped the conflict between their civilizations.
For Fringe salvagers, the vessel represents an unimaginable fortune. Even a fraction of its ancient military technology could be worth more than the combined cargoes of an entire merchant fleet.
For the authorities of the Expanse, however, the discovery of an operational Dominion dreadnought would present an immediate security concern.
There is no guarantee that its surviving crew would recognize modern political boundaries, acknowledge contemporary governments, or accept that the military campaign they were dispatched to undertake has long since ended.
And somewhere aboard that immense vessel, there may still be sealed orders bearing the authority of the Siriusan Empress herself.
GAME MASTER’S INFORMATION
The Unfinished Voyage
The legend of the Qui’osh Iskara is based on a genuine phenomenon. The dreadnought exists. Its stasis chambers are occupied. Thousands of Siriusan soldiers remain preserved within the ship’s armored interior, their biological functions suspended and their bodies protected from the passage of time.
The precise circumstances surrounding the vessel’s disappearance, however, remain open for the Game Master to develop. One possibility is that the Qui’osh Iskara encountered an unusual spatial disturbance while operating near the Rift, leaving it trapped between normal space and an unstable region of reality.
Its automated systems continue attempting to complete the vessel’s final mission, periodically returning it to normal space before the disturbance pulls it away again. This would account for the irregular sightings, the lack of conventional Foldspace signatures, and the dreadnought’s apparent preservation. It would also introduce an interesting temporal complication.
To the modern Expanse, centuries have passed since the vessel disappeared. To the ship’s internal systems, perhaps only months—or even weeks—have elapsed. Its command intelligence may still be waiting for instructions from the Dominion, unaware that the political authority it serves no longer exists in the form it remembers.
Most importantly, the Game Master should resist immediately revealing the dreadnought’s original mission. The sealed orders of the Empress can become a mystery in their own right, particularly if the vessel was carrying something more significant than an expeditionary military force.
ADVENTURE SEED
A Voice from the Past
An adventure involving the Que’Sha, the Siriusan Dominion, and the mystery of the Last Vigil. A Que’Sha exploration vessel operating along the Fringe intercepts a narrow-band military transmission. The signal is weak, heavily distorted, and transmitted using an archaic encryption protocol that modern communication systems initially fail to recognize.
After considerable effort, the crew identifies the transmission as originating from the ancient Siriusan Dominion. Its contents appear unremarkable at first. It is a routine military status report, identifying a vessel by an obsolete Dominion registry, confirming that its personnel remain secured in stasis, and requesting verification of its next operational orders.
The message concludes with a date several centuries in the past. The Que’Sha captain immediately forwards the transmission to the appropriate authorities. When historians finally decipher the vessel’s identification, they make a disturbing discovery. The message originated from the Qui’osh Iskara. The Sword of the Empress. The Last Vigil.
The Assignment
The player characters are recruited to investigate the transmission and, if possible, determine the dreadnought’s current location.
Their employer might be a Que’Sha historical institution, a private research organization, or an Expanse authority concerned about the possible reappearance of an ancient Dominion warship.
Initially, the assignment appears straightforward: follow the transmission’s origin, locate the vessel, and gather sufficient evidence to establish its identity.
However, the characters are not the only ones interested in the discovery.
Rumors of the intercepted signal have begun circulating through the Fringe, attracting salvagers, private military interests, and individuals hoping to acquire ancient Dominion technology.
Some are motivated by profit. Others have considerably more personal reasons for wanting the dreadnought found—or destroyed.
The Second Transmission
Shortly after the characters begin t heir investigation, another message is intercepted. This transmission originates from the same vessel, but something has changed. Unlike the previous communication, which carried a centuries-old date, the new message bears a recent timestamp. It is considerably shorter. The encryption is partially corrupted, but several phrases can be recovered:
INTERCEPTED TRANSMISSION
DOMINION MILITARY PROTOCOL
VESSEL: QUI’OSH ISKARA IMPERIAL AUTHORIZATION: VERIFIED PRIMARY COMMAND SYSTEM: ACTIVE STASIS VAULTS: INTEGRITY CONFIRMED AWAKENING PROTOCOL: INITIATED AWAITING IMPERIAL COMMAND…
END OF TRANSMISSION
The implications are immediate. Someone—or something—aboard the Qui’osk Iskara has begun awakening its crew. And for the first time in centuries, the Sword of the Empress may be preparing to complete its unfinished voyage.
Possible Directions for the Adventure
The discovery creates several potential paths for the player characters:
- Find the Ghost: Trace the vessel’s intermittent appearances and determine whether its movements follow a recognizable pattern associated with the Rift.
- Board the Dreadnought: Enter the vessel during one of its brief appearances in normal space, potentially becoming trapped aboard when it disappears again.
- The Sleeping Army: Discover the condition of the stasis vaults and determine whether the awakening sequence can—or should—be interrupted.
- The Empress’s Orders: Recover the dreadnought’s sealed mission directives and discover why the Dominion dispatched such an enormous military force into the region.
- An Enemy Out of Time: Establish contact with a surviving Siriusan commander who believes the Dominion still exists and regards the modern Que’Sha as an enemy combatant.
The central mystery should not simply be whether the crew can be awakened. It should be what happens when they are. The Qui’osk Iskara carries the military might of a forgotten empire, but its crew may have no understanding of the civilization into which they are about to emerge.
For them, the war may have ended only yesterday. And somewhere within the dreadnought’s ancient command archives lies an imperial order that has never been rescinded. The Sword of the Empress has not yet completed its mission.
