Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition Report (Jan 20)

Well, it is over. I built it up in my own mind so much, I am not sure if could have lived up to my expectations even if it went perfectly. And it went far from perfect, at least in my eyes.

We had 8 players including myself. We had to turn away a 9th. In hindsight, I wish I had given that guy my place and I stood out and GM’ed. I hate that I did not do that. It sure woudl have been a better game for me, at least. I basically was ineffectual in the over all game, but in every case I have played this game, I am too busy trying to explain the rules to pay attention to my strategy.

8 players is a lot to handle especially when you have 4 or more people that have not played the game before. Technically I had 5 people that had not played this game before. 1 owned theg ame, but apparently had not read the rules, another read the rules, another player 2nd edition. The rest were new and one guy broguht his girlfriend who had not played any game lilke this before. As much as I like him and appreciate his situation, I would not recommend TI3 as a first game to get a girl into gaming. No Way!

It’s an intense game in general. This particular session was very intense. I can not complain about how the players were because everyone was very cooperative and understanding. One of my problem was that I had to repeat things too many times. I think I was the only one that really lost patience, but only because of time and how long things were taking. Set up was way too long. I needed to be better prepared for the confusion that insued.

The game really went fairly smoothly considering. Without a doubt, it could have been worse. I got wiped off the face of the board by the 3rd (technically 5th) turn.

In the end, it was fun and I will do it again. But not with that many new players combined with THAT many players. I hope I can get some of them back to play a better game.
