Nightlord-Class Battle Sailcraft
The Iron Sovereigns of the Southern Sea
The pride of the Varkesh Sovereign Navy, the Nightlord-Class Battle Sailcraft are colossal, heavily armored sailing warships that dominate the Southern Sea of Vesperion III. Combining traditional wind-driven propulsion with auxiliary power systems and advanced energy weaponry, these floating fortresses carry batteries of heavy laser cannons, including distinctive articulated gun platforms mounted on extendable mechanical arms. Each platform is independently manned and capable of engaging targets across a wide field of fire, allowing a Nightlord to unleash devastating broadsides while simultaneously engaging threats from multiple directions. Their reinforced hulls, towering sails, and considerable marine complements make them equally formidable in naval engagements and coastal sieges. Maintained in sufficient numbers to patrol Varkesh’s territorial waters, these enormous vessels represent one of the city-state’s greatest military advantages. Rival Terraxian powers may covet the wealth and resources of Varkesh, but few are willing to challenge a navy capable of turning an invading fleet into burning wreckage long before it reaches the shore.
Among the Terraxians, an old naval saying persists: “The Southern Sea belongs to the wind, but the wind belongs to Varkesh.”
Nightlord-Class Battle Sailcraft
Varkesh Sovereign Navy — Heavy Naval Battleship
Size 12 (Gargantuan)
The Nightlord-Class Battle Sailcraft is the backbone of the Varkesh Sovereign Navy and one of the most formidable naval vessels operating on the Southern Sea of Vesperion III. These enormous, galleon-like warships combine traditional wind propulsion with modern engineering, heavy armor, and devastating energy weaponry. Their distinctive articulated plasma cannons can be elevated and repositioned to engage targets in nearly any direction, while conventional broadside autocannons provide sustained fire against smaller vessels and coastal fortifications.

Armament
The Nightlord carries sixteen primary weapons, divided between its elevated plasma batteries and conventional broadside autocannons.
| Weapon | Qty | Range | Damage | AP | RoF |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Articulated Plasma Cannon | 8 | 50/100/200 | 4d10 | 12 | 1 |
| Heavy Broadside Autocannon | 8 | 30/60/120 | 3d8 | 4 | 3 |
Weapon Arrangement
- 8 Articulated Plasma Cannons: Mounted on extendable, independently operated mechanical arms distributed along the upper deck and superstructure. Each has its own gunner and can engage targets independently, subject to the ship’s rigging and structural obstructions.
- 8 Heavy Autocannons: Four mounted along the port broadside and four along the starboard broadside, firing through reinforced gunports.
Special Abilities
Articulated Gun Platforms: Each plasma cannon is mounted on an independently operated mechanical arm capable of extending above the ship’s deck, allowing the gunner to fire over obstacles, other vessels, and portions of the ship’s superstructure. These platforms can engage elevated targets, including aircraft and low-flying grav vehicles.
Armored Hull: The Nightlord’s reinforced composite hull provides Armor +12, incorporated into its Toughness.
Auxiliary Propulsion: Although primarily wind-driven, the Nightlord possesses auxiliary propulsion systems that allow it to maneuver during unfavorable wind conditions. Without auxiliary propulsion, the vessel’s speed is dependent upon prevailing winds.
Naval Command Platform: The elevated command deck provides an unobstructed view of the surrounding battlefield. A Nightlord typically carries a naval officer and command staff capable of coordinating several smaller escort vessels.
Marine Complement: Each Nightlord carries up to 100 marines for boarding actions, coastal assaults, and shipboard security.
Exposed Rigging: Attacks specifically targeting the sails and rigging may disable wind propulsion without necessarily damaging the ship’s armored hull. Treat the sails and rigging as a vulnerable component for Called Shots (−4). A successful damaging attack that causes the vessel to become Shaken reduces its wind-driven Top Speed by half until repaired.
Independent Batteries: Each cannon is operated by its own gun crew. Individual weapons may fire at separate targets, although the vessel must have sufficient crew to operate them.
Suggested Combat Use
A Nightlord is designed to engage multiple vessels simultaneously rather than concentrate all its firepower on a single opponent. Its articulated plasma cannons target heavily armored warships, fortifications, and approaching aircraft, while the autocannon batteries suppress smaller vessels attempting to close the distance.
A typical Nightlord rarely operates alone. The Varkesh Sovereign Navy deploys these massive warships alongside smaller escorts and reconnaissance vessels, creating formidable defensive formations throughout the Southern Sea.
