Varkesh
Sovereign City-State of the Southern Sea
Planet: Vesperion III
Vesperion System
Terraxian Territories
Near the southern pole of Vesperion III, along the shores of the planet’s only major permanent body of water, stands Varkesh, the largest and most powerful of the Terraxian city-states. Known to its citizens as the City of the Southern Sea, Varkesh is an immense fortress metropolis whose towering architecture, fortified districts, and sprawling industrial complexes reflect centuries of uninterrupted warfare.
Unlike the countless settlements scattered across the planet’s arid deserts, Varkesh enjoys access to something considerably more valuable than territory: water. The Southern Sea provides fisheries, irrigation, industrial resources, and a comparatively stable environment in which a large population can flourish. Even during Vesperion III’s devastating five-year winter cycle, the sea moderates the surrounding climate, making Varkesh one of the most desirable and strategically important locations on the planet.
Dominating the city’s skyline is the High Citadel, an enormous fortified structure housing the ruling government, military command, and ancient archives dating back to the original Terran colonization of the system. Generations of expansion have transformed Varkesh into a formidable military and industrial power, capable of fielding vast armies, armored divisions, and the mounted cavalry for which Terraxian warfare has become notorious.
Its prosperity, however, has done little to encourage peace. Varkesh regards itself not merely as another city-state, but as the rightful center of Terraxian civilization. Its rulers consider the other independent city-states little more than rebellious territories awaiting reunification. Consequently, rival powers frequently form temporary alliances to resist Varkesh’s territorial ambitions, only to resume fighting among themselves once the immediate threat has passed.
Beyond Vesperion III, the Sarginians maintain a strict quarantine around the system, a consequence of the Terraxians’ extraordinary history of violence and hostility toward outside authority. Varkesh remains of particular interest to those monitoring the quarantine. Its considerable population, resources, military strength, and political ambitions make it a potential catalyst for planetary unification.
For now, however, the wars continue. Varkesh looks northward across the deserts toward territories it believes rightfully belong to it, while its enemies look southward toward the Southern Sea, coveting the prosperity that has made the city so powerful.
On Vesperion III, water sustains life, but war defines it.
