Afterthoughts of Origins: Con Energy
Now that a little time has passed since my trip to Origins, some more thoughts have been forming in my head that I thought I should write down based on some of my daily posts and my experience at Origins. In some ways this is an analysis of what I experienced at Origins and in others it is an overall discussion of con energy and signs there are problems. It is not a condemnation of Origins and all their hard work. They did a great job! Origins was well organized, even when things like a fire threw the proverbial monkey wrench in the works. They really di well in general and I do not mean to take away from that.
Mysticon 2013
In 2013, my wife and I picked a couple of cons to go to. First on the list was Mysticon in Roanoke, Virginia (February 22-24). This is a con with an interesting history. In the 80s, Mysticon existed for 3 years and I am not sure about the circumstances behind it’s collapse back then. It is now in its third year in its new incarnation. I remember working with some of their concom, helping them with advice when I worked in the fandom con business. They are good people, very smart about their approach to the business and I think they are going to see the fruits of that intelligence for years to come.
Amidst the Ancient Trees (CoC 7e Playtest)
MACE 2012 – Chad Bowser was going to run this game but was forced to cancel, so I filled in after he sent me the early release copy of CoC 7e and the adventure. I loved what I saw in the game system changes and we had a lot of fun. Simply adventure into the mountains…
MACE 2012 Report (Part 2)
MACE 2012 Report Part 2 SATURDAY Saturday started out bright and early for me at 7:30 AM, arriving at the gaming registration desk around 8:30 AM. Saturday for me was going to be very busy and I concentrated most of my volunteer shifts during this time. I had to fill in for two GMs sessions…
Good Night Vienna
System/Setting: CoC 6e/World War II, North Africa From The Shadows of War adventure supplement (PDF). This was a phenomenal experience. One of the best games I have ever run at MACE. Good adventure, grounded in real world experiences. I even built a model of the plane they were flying Ran it with only a few…
Call of Cthulhu 7e
Playtest at MACE At MACE 2012, I was given an opportunity by Chad Bowser to run Call of Cthulhu 7th edition. He sent me the PDF of the August (GenCon?) version of the playtest rules, which I printed out and attempted to cram into my brain in the two weekend before the convention. When I…
MACE 2012 Report (Part 1)
MACE 2012 Report Part 1 A lot of anticipation built up to the 2012 move to Charlotte. Quite of few detractors from the Raleigh area voiced their displeasure with the move. “It’s like a whole state away…” when it was just an extra hour drive. We sympathized with those displeased but a business decision had…
Resignation from ConCarolinas
Hello, It is with much sadness that I announce my resignation from ConCarolinas Inc. 11 years with the group that started with helping the founders establish the organization and running the first several cons has ended abruptly and not entirely by my choice. I have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the…
ConCarolinas 2012, Gaming Director Report
ConCarolinas 2012 Gaming Report ConCarolinas 2012 marked a year that put us up against Origins on the same weekend. In some ways, that effected us while in others it did not. I did not try to plan around Origins, I just did what I do and hoped for the best. Overall, I feel that ConCarolinas…
