Disposable Heroes Paper Minisis a new PDF/Web Gaming Aid from Politically Incorrect Games.
After writing my first review of this product, I realized I woefully neglected a major feature of this product/service. I have to extend my sincerest apologies to those at Politically Incorrect Games, especially Brett M. Bernstein, for my bone-headed mistake. In my rush to get a few PDF reviews done, I overlooked a major aspect of this product, by treating it like all the other PDFs I get the privilege to review. As I discovered, this product is way more than a simple PDF, and I commend the authors and designers for their work.
Below is my initial review of the PDFs that are directly downloadable from the site (followed by my addendum)
Miniatures, of course, are often used in role playing games. Some GMs do not use them at all because of the risk of boiling their game down to a miniature skirmish game, while others like playing it that way. The immense popularity of the D&D minis has shown that there is a market for minis, and most people I know that buy the minis buy them for the role playing game. Now enterDisposable Heroes Paper Minis,an approach to make minis affordable and easy for those players and GMs that do not want to put the time into real minis or the money into the collectible minis.
The Disposable Heroes Paper Minis PDF files are simply a four-page PDFs with several cut-out, tent-fold character counters. At the time of this writing, I downloaded all seven of their files, which are all fantasy based minis, however there are more promised, including sets to support Politically Incorrect Games game linesIron Gauntlets RPG, Two-Fisted Tales RPG (which I reviewed favorably on GamingReport.com),Rune Stryders RPG,andHardNova RPG.Each file opens up with simple printing instructions for best results – use a color printer, on hard stock paper – all that you would expect. Each file contains about 30 different types of character or creatures.
TheFantasy Set 1 through 4includes examples of all the basic d20 OGL races in a variety of classes, as well as Orcs, Goblins, Ogres, and a variety of villains. Set 1 is basically player characters; Set 2 are humanoids, like goblins and orcs; Set 3 are undead; Set 4 are villains, like evil monks, evil wizards and vampires. The twoCritterssets include basic monsters and domesticated/farm animals. The art on the counters is top notch and well-done. I would be definitely inclined to use them if I were running a fantasy game, and when they put out a sci-fi version, I will definitely look into those. I would recommend these PDFs to anyone looking for an alternative to minis. They are a quality product.
However, as I said, the product is much more than just these PDFs. The key feature that I missed is the web site itself. Once you have access to the Disposable Heroes site, you can CUSTOMIZE the PDFs to your gaming needs. Along with the ability to download a full set of minis, one can download only select minis, download an army, and label and number your selected minis, all while customizing the files you are downloading. Also all minis are available in color, black-and-white as well as silhouette. The sheets are fairly inexpensive – $4.00.
After taking a second look at the site, the design, and their products, I have to say that not only was it a huge mistake on my part in missing the customizable features, but all groveling aside, Politically Incorrect Games (PIG) has impressed and surprised me time and time again by taking things to an unexpected higher level. In this case, I expected your run-of-the-mill PDF and treated it as such, but as it turns out, the product was WAY more than that. There is no doubt in my mind that PIG is going places, and I sincerely look forward to seeing more of their work.
